The Association provides educational opportunities, information sharing, and networking between attorneys who primarily defend civil actions. Requirements for membership include:

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS:

  • Member in good standing, Virginia State Bar;
  • Engaged in the practice of law for one year or more (experience requirement may be waived*);
  • 25% of practice in civil litigation;
  • More than 50% of civil litigation practice in the defense of civil actions;
  • Willing to work on behalf of the VADA and the defense bar.
(Note to Government and Corporate Counsel: Attorneys who are directly employed by Virginia governmental entities or businesses may be admitted to membership without the requirement that they be directly involved in civil litigation provided that the VADA Membership Committee is satisfied that their professional duties are compatible with the professional and educational objectives of the Association.)

New member dues are $150.00. Tax law requires that we notify you that 5.0% ($7.50) of your dues payment is not deductible as an ordinary and necessary business expense for the 2008 tax year because that portion of your dues is budgeted to be used in support of lobbying.

*Attorneys eligible for Young Lawyers' Division membership are either (l) under 35 years of age, OR (2) have practiced law six years or less.
