PRESIDENT’S WELCOME
I hope everyone is enjoying this beautiful Virginia spring. It has certainly been a busy one for the VADA!
I want to start off this month’s Welcome by thanking all who were involved in our recent 2023 Spring Sections Seminar in Staunton. Hotel 24 South was the perfect host and our speakers, sponsors, Section Chairs and Vice Chairs, Amy, and Sherma pulled off a fantastic meeting! The CLE content was impressive, and the fellowship was highly enjoyable. I also offer a special thank you to all who donated to our fund and supply drive for Valley Mission.
Last month, the Southwest Region met for a Networking Reception at Wasena City Taproom in Roanoke. Earlier this month, the Potomac Region held their Networking Reception at Settle Down Easy Brewery at Falls Church. A grand time was had by all at these events. Thank you to our Southwest Regional Director, Chris Dadak, and our Potomac Regional Director, Britton Wight, for organizing, and a huge shout-out to Planet Depos and InQuis for sponsoring!
On June 1, the Capitol Region will gather for a Networking Reception at the home of Past President Kate McCauley. All members are welcome. If you would like to attend, please RSVP here.

Compassion Fatigue Taylor Brewer Moran Reeves Conn Have you ever experienced compassion fatigue? Compassion fatigue is the cumulative physical, emotional and psychological effects of continual exposure to traumatic or distressing events when working in a helping capacity.
Lawyers are at risk for compassion fatigue due to repeated exposure to client distress and trauma. It is particularly common among those with high case loads and those with regular exposure to human-induced trauma. Symptoms of compassion fatigue include intrusion of disturbing imagery from cases into thoughts and dreams; becoming pessimistic and irritable; and feeling overwhelmed and emotionally exhausted. The first step to treatment is awareness. Know about compassion fatigue and acknowledge that your daily tasks may expose you to photos, videos, medical records, and witness accounts of difficult experiences. Reach out to other lawyers who can understand, relate, and empathize, and seek professional assistance if your symptoms begin to negatively impact your daily life. The Virginia Judge and Lawyers Assistance Program is a good place to start.
